Perspectives of Grandchildren Living with Their Grandparents
Sands Roberta G.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to look into the lives of grandchildren living with their grandparents, focusing on the grandchildren¡¯s point of view. Previously obtained qualitative data were reanalyzed, attending to the way the grandchildren¡¯s talked about their parents, their caregiving grandparents, and both their many challenges and their considerable strengths. In spite of the hardships they experienced, the grandchildren seemed to be content with their lives. They had mixed feelings about their parents, including disappointment, shame, and affection. Most expressed positive feelings toward their grandparents, with some even referring to them as ¡°mom¡± or ¡°mamma.¡± The study demonstrates that positive attachment patterns, emerging from positive dyadic relationships, nurture children¡¯s strengths and bolster the autonomy necessary for overcoming challenges and thriving. The authors suggest that family therapy for grandparent-grandchildren families should focus on enhancing their strengths and resilience and developing positive relationships.
